| Incremental encoder is the term given to sensors for recording changes in position (linear or rotating) that can measure both the distance and direction of travel.
They are also known as optical encoders.
Unlike measuring systems that work continuously, incremental encoders have a solid measure with a repeating periodic counting track. The measurement is based on a directional reference and a count.
